Eurotech's Tigon supercomputer is an early adopter of the co-processors Intel ® Xeon ™ 5120D Phi to stand out in performances, energy efficiency and programmability

Leipzig – 18 June 2013 - Eurotech, a leading company in embedded and supercomputing, introduced at the International Supercomputer Conference (ISC) in Leipzig (17-20 of June), the new version of the Aurora Tigon supercomputers, powered by the coprocessors Intel Xeon Phi 5120D, announced to the market in the occasion of the German exhibition.

The combination of Eurotech design, conceived to achieve the maximum computing power with the lowest possible consumption, with the high efficiency obtained thanks to the Intel Xeon E5 processors and Intel Xeon Phi 5120D coprocessors has enabled the introduction of one of the most energy-efficient supercomputers in the market. Early measurements performed on the system suggest values around 3 GFlops / Watt.

“These high energy efficiency levels are possible thanks to the design of Eurotech very attentive to the energy aspects and the advanced technology of Intel components, such as Intel Xeon E5 processors and second generation Intel Xeon Phi accelerators – says Giampietro Tecchiolli, Eurotech CTO - The Aurora direct liquid cooling system helps avoiding the use of air conditioning in warmer climates and "free cooling", a technique until now possible only with relatively low outdoor temperatures.”

Tigon are the only supercomputer in the market to apply the liquid cooling system directly on both Intel processors and coprocessors. This solution allows an increase of the cooling water temperature to over 50°C, reducing or eliminating in this way the use of the data center air cooling, onerous from an energetic and economic point of view.

“The combination of Intel Xeon E5 processor family and Intel Xeon Phi 5120D co-processor creates the conditions for a paradigm shift in the scale of highly parallel applications processing – says Andrea Luiselli, Intel Italy Enterprise Technology Specialist – moving from petascale performances (a million billion floating point operations/s) levels to exascale (1000 times higher than petascale), thus increasing the ability to perform faster calculations and simulations and the dissemination of High Performance Computing beyond laboratories and universities and achieve maximum productivity even in the corporate market.”

Besides the importance of energy efficiency aspects, Aurora Tigon leverages on Intel Xeon E5 and Intel Xeon Phi 5120D to get performances around 310 TFlop / s for single rack with a footprint of about 1.5 m2.

The co-processor takes advantage from the programming languages, parallelism models and development tools representative of the Intel ® Many Integrated Core architecture. This ensures companies and IT departments an ease of use of the parallel code, without having to re-train developers on proprietary programming models and hardware-specific, normally associated with accelerators, thus avoiding to the same to re-write the code from the beginning.

Tigon supercomputers allow a data center to be more efficient and compact, enabling energy and room savings which can reduce TCO (total cost of ownership) of around 30 and 50%, additional savings to those of resources and programming time already achieved through the use of Intel Xeon Phi.

Tigons contribute to a reduction of more than 1,500 tons of CO2 emissions, along its lifetime. In addition, the hot water output from the calculator can be used for space heating, in the absorption chillers or in industrial processes. The high density and consequent savings of space contribute to a further carbon reduction.
