Single Board Computer ISIS helps Motorcyclists ride safely

Launched in 2008 by the EU as a 3-year research programme, SAFERIDER is a major international project designed to improve safety and comfort for motorcyclists through advanced technology. Involving four countries (UK, France, Italy and Greece) and the collaboration of 21 leading companies in the manufacture of motorcycles, components and helmets, SAFERIDER involves two elements: Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS) and On-Board Information Systems (OBIS).

Cooperating closely in the UK with MIRA, Eurotech has supplied its ISIS single board computer as a vital component in the ARAS Control Module (ACM).
The ISIS processes the warning algorithms for the major HMI (Human Machine Interface) ARAS applications of Speed Alert, Curve Warning, Frontal Collision Warning and Intersection Support. Warnings are delivered to the rider via on-board screens together with innovative methods using audio and vibration signals.

Calculations are very processor intensive and the ISIS was selected because of its high speed Intel® Atom™ CPU, together with other high performance features. Its size and lightness were also critical for motorcycle safety.

SAFERIDER developments are certain to greatly increase the security of motorcyclists, who are among the most vulnerable of road users.
