Job Description:
This role will provide vital support to the Eurotech sales process. It will suit a software engineer who has or is seeking to gain more customer facing, commercial experience, whilst remaining in a hands-on technical role. You will assist in developing solutions which demonstrate Eurotech’s technology and products and meet client’s requirements. You will support the sales team in the presentation of a proposal and development of a working proof of concept, or technology demonstration, to show the capability of Eurotech’s equipment and services in the clients intended application.
You will directly support the Sales Team, writing software to support customer devices and applications using Java running on embedded Linux. Additional requirements could include front-end dashboards and analytics, and other proof of concept web applications in support of embedded and Cloud opportunities. You will also provide technical support and assistance to customer’s engineering teams through the design-in phase, increasing the speed of adoption of Eurotech products and reducing the customer’s time to market. You will establish and maintain close technical ties to the customer to facilitate rapid resolution of customer issues and to also identify upgrade opportunities within existing accounts. The Field Applications Engineer will be able to influence decision makers by establishing themselves and Eurotech as a trusted partner to the client organisation.


Main Responsibilities:
• Develop applications, implement communications protocols, and write other software in support of client opportunities and Eurotech demonstrator projects, primarily in Java running in an embedded Linux environment (>50% of the role)
• Serve as a technical consultant to potential and existing customers, qualifying requirements and offering guidance as to the best solution
• Assist in the provision of accurate and timely cost estimation data and preparation of customer proposals in support of the Account Managers
• Assist in the pre-sales technical discussion of sales leads in order to define the technical customer requirements, identify and demonstrate potential solutions
• Accompany sales staff on domestic and international travels and participate in technical conference calls as technical expert
• Support participation of Eurotech in international trade shows, exhibitions and industry events
• Write application notes, quick-start guides, how-to documents
• When in the office, assist the sales team with day-to-day technical questions


Other Functions:
• Provide assistance with post-sales technical support when customers are at the development stage
• Training and developing staff within the Sales & Marketing Department
• Provide colleagues and management with regular project updates in a timely manner
• Perform any other duties as reasonably directed by your Manager


Preferred Qualifications:
• Degree, or equivalent experience, in Software Engineering
• Ability to demonstrate capability in each of the key competence areas above
• Current full clean driving licence


Preferred Experience & Skills Required:
• Comprehensive knowledge of Java. Experience with OSGi highly desirable. Knowledge of Kura will be a plus
• Software applications programming experience on ‘embedded computers’ and familiarity with the Linux operating system
• An understanding of integrating applications level software within embedded hardware and operating systems
• A sound technical understanding of computer systems
• Possess a working knowledge of TCP/IP networking and the internet
• Ability to provide technical support and troubleshooting
• Interested in software technology evolution
• Ability to explain and simplify complex concepts
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and a natural ability to work with a variety of personalities
• Excellent written and spoken English

2. Embedded Linux Engineer

Job Description:
In addition to maintaining and developing Linux support across Eurotech’s line of embedded products, the candidate will actively contribute to existing Linux development and Eurotech’s award winning Everyware™ Cloud Internet of Things (IoT) program. By learning and employing the most recent tools and techniques, including advanced configuration management and cloud-based solutions, Eurotech aims at more automated quality control and predictable delivery times.

The position is based in Cambridge, UK. The candidate will join a multi-national team of incredibly talented, hardworking developers based in Europe and the United States and will have the opportunity to support customers worldwide.


Main Responsibilities:
• Develop embedded Linux distributions, board support packages and device drivers for Eurotech embedded hardware, including x86 and ARM based platforms
• Organize, automate and manage Linux distributions across Eurotech’s portfolio of products, across chip architectures and platform versions
• Provide feasibility and cost studies for custom software projects
• Provide support and guidance to the systems development and systems application teams to create complete product solutions
• Project management to ensure efficient and timely delivery of engineering projects, adjusting priorities where necessary
• To undertake the responsibilities of applying the Eurotech Product Life Cycle to a product development, handling all aspects of the life cycle from concept/feasibility through to production release
• Liaise with the Operations team to ensure the products can be manufactured
• Liaise with and visit customers as required
• To provide support to the Sales team when necessary to ensure specifications meet customer requirements
• Archive all computer-generated work so that it may be safely recovered in the future


Other Functions:
• Support other internal departments as required
• Identify quality issues and initiate corrective actions
•Assist the Board Design and Systems engineering teams to create complete product solutions
• Liaise and provide support directly to customers as required
• Keep up-to-date with core changes in the Linux kernel
• To observe at all times the working practices and procedures in the Eurotech Business Manual, and when observed, to highlight changes that could be implemented to ensure a continuous process of quality improvement
• Awareness of all Health & Safety and Fire Safety procedures relating to the areas of responsibility
• Perform any other duties as reasonably directed by your Manager


Preferred Qualifications:
• Degree, or equivalent in an electronic or software subject and significant C/C++ programming experience with Linux at kernel building and device driver development level
• And/or the ability to demonstrate capability in each of the key competence areas below


Preferred Experience & Skills Required:
• An in-depth technical understanding of the Linux Operating system
• Proven experience with Linux, its configuration, kernel, driver, and application development
• Experience with Linux Networking Configuration (iptables, routing, cellular, wifi)
• Knowledge of security techniques and best practices
• Excellent programming skills (C, Shell Scripting)
• Experience of developing low level software
• Experience with GCC/GNU Linux tool chain and cross compiling
• Comfortable with version control and release management e.g. Git
• Excellent written and spoken English
• Can’t be afraid of wires, termination blocks, or jumper cables


Desirable Experience
• Knowledge of and hands-on experience with Open Embedded or the Yocto project
• Wind River Linux and or Red Hat Enterprise Linux
• Using Docker (or other containers)
• Bootloader porting (e.g. U-Boot)
• Secure Boot and Chain of Trust
• Ansible as an IoT automation platform
• Java programming
• Using Linux configuration management tools like cobbler, kickstart, puppet and chef are highly welcome
• Android development experience - particularly low level Android porting and not just application development
• Experience with industry specific protocols such as Bluetooth LE, Modbus, CanBus, Zigbee, I2C, SPI, PWM, or others is highly welcome.
• Experience with Agile Software Development and SCRUM
